Welcome! We are a new public pet support organisation “Best Friend” operating in Lithuania. After all, pets are our best friends, and friends care for each other, right?
Indeed, increasingly more attention is paid to pets and their rights in Lithuania, but is that enough?
Poor pets are still beaten, kept tethered to the doghouse and fed only when the owner finds time for that. The pet is a friend, not a piece of furniture or security alarm in the yard. Not to mention the horror-like stories when old, unnecessary pets are tied and left in the forest to die. Aggressive or sick pets are disposed of into the fields or – even worse – brutally killed.
The laws of the Republic of Lithuania are not strict for pet torturers, and provide only low fines for their beating, kicking out of the home or other cruel treatment: for example, a fine of merely 50 EUR is usually imposed for cruel behaviour or torture of pets.
Pet care organisations work sincerely, but their funding is very low. Pet keeping conditions are poor: in almost all cases, the leased shelter facilities are too small, care products are short and feed is cheap and not complete.
The greatest shortage of funds is experienced for treatment and medication.
There are more than 50 organisations in Lithuania that support and help pets. Most organisations do not receive state support and are funded by private individuals or enterprises. It goes without saying that it is not sufficient.
Can all of us change it? We want to help and raise funds both in Lithuania and in neighbouring or pet-friendly countries, and distribute them transparently for each pet organisation, according to the needs. We are not planning to transfer money, but by contacting each of them, take care of what is most needed – to pay for the treatment of pets, to repair the premises, to buy feed etc.
We invite you to contribute and help our best friends! There are several ways you can help: by providing cash, pet food, veterinary or care products. Any help matters.
Of course, money would help to pet most of all because the early all shelters require repair and special equipment. Also, one of the most important things is medication and treatment, which, no secret, are expensive.
We are an extremely transparent and open organisation! We will publish all information and reports on our website, which will indicate exactly the following information: How much support is received, what it is needed for and where it is spent. We want to be an example of transparency, so you will know everything about us – our team, who cooperates with us and what projects are being implemented.
Join the team of best friends and let’s help pets together! Let’s get in touch, let’s talk, meet and discuss. Together, we can do a lot!
